BMW rams tree, 10-year-old killed
Chandigarh: In third fatal accident in as many days, a 10-year-old boy was killed and his father received minor injuries after their BMW collided with a tree near the old airport chowk lightpoint in the early hours on Friday. The Sector 31 police registered a case against the victim's father for his alleged rash driving. However, the BMW owner said he lost control over the car due to a technical glitch.
The victim was identified as Amay Verma, a resident of Sector 27, Chandigarh.
Sector 31 police said Avek Verma, along with his son Amay, was returning after meeting his in-laws from Zirakpur in a BMW around 1.30 am. The deceased Amay was sitting next to the driver's seat. As they crossed the light point of the old airport, Avek lost control of the car and first hit the divider of the road and then rammed into a tree on the roadside.
Amay was critically injured in the incident, and his father Avek also received minor injuries. However, Avek took his son to GMCH-32 in an auto rickshaw. Doctors referred Amay to PGI due to his critical injuries, where he succumbed during treatment. The rear portion of the BMW was totally damaged in the accident.
Sector 31 police recorded the statement of Avek Verma. Police said the car driver claimed that due to a technical fault in the car, he could not reduce the speed and apply brakes. So he lost control of the vehicle and hit the divider and tree on the roadside.
However, Sector 31 police registered a case against Avek Verma under sections of 281 and 125 A of BNS. Police also said that they would send the car for technical inspection to verify the claims of technical fault in his car and were also checking the CCTV footage of the area to verify whether the boy was wearing a seat belt or not at the time of the accident.
